Red is the color of Romance!

As valentines day is fast approaching I decided to devote this blog to romance. Romance can be much much more than you may think. Take this Dior couture gown from fall 2004. When I see this dress, its not only the color that draws me in, but also the porcelain makeup and rich jewels that make my heart skip a beat. Satin and taffeta are some of the most luxurious fabrics to touch, another reason this gown is so romantically inspiring.

Drawing inspiration from this dress, well this whole fall 2004 show for that matter, here are a few ways to become the perfect valentine lover.

Gloves, as seen above, are one of the perfect items of clothing to wear for valentines day. Romantic classy and perfect to peel of with your teeth. Satin rouched types are my favorite, but you could always get a little involved and add some feathers or some rhinestones a la Dita Von Teese.

As far as make-up goes for valentines you mustn’t go over board or cover yourself in every bit of makeup on your dresser. A fresh healthy skin is best, and rouge and red or pink lips are your best friend. Of course don’t over do the rouge, but do make it noticed and pinch your cheeks to give a natural glow. A thin flick of black eyeliner will give you the cat eye look, another very romantic look. I don’t think putting a ton of black Kohl under and over your eyes mixed with black shadow is necessary, you want to look kissable and delicate, not over worked and caked up.

Now with your hair, a lot of you may love doing that straight hair thing, but when it comes to romance curls are the winners! soft flowing curls are reminiscent of when romance was so truly alive, back in the 40s and 50s. Usually i would advise on a lot of hair spray to keep them in, but on valentines you want your hair to move with you, not stay in the same place. Soft and delicate is the key.

oh the glory of lingerie. Take inspiration from that gown and think old time glory. Gorgeous French lace, satins and silk should be the main factors to your valentines lingerie. A pair of great stockings is a perfect start, for the glamour puss seams are the only type of stockings. Plain are still gorgeous, sheer black are lovely. Team those with a perfect girdle, corset or suspender. I don’t believe there is a true need to have perfect matching set of lingerie, I think its Nice to match through colors or textures. Have a theme if that’s helps you. Marie Antoinette, burlesque, cabaret are a few good themes for romantic lingerie. You can always top it of with a nice rhinestone encrusted whip, or handcuffs to live life a little dangerously, if that isn’t your usual forte.

Perfume…oh perfume! It depends on your type of scent. I, myself, prefer sweet and sugary scents. But I sometimes like a strong classy scent. On valentines day you want something soft and inviting, something that will reel him in close. Dab it on all your sensitive areas, neck, wrist and wherever else you may feel sexy. Miss Dior Cherie might be my pick this year for valentines day, its soft and sweet and I hope very inviting……

Part Uno: Me, Myself and Fashion

Since 1995, when I was 7 years old, I’ve been cutting out images of glamorous woman wearing even more glamorous dresses from my mothers magazines. To this day, I still cut out frocks from magazines, and I study everything there is to know about them, and their creators. There was one I remember vividly, a lady wearing a black pirate styled hat, with lace trim. She was wearing what seemed to be a corset, white with a picture of a baby’s face on the front. It was quite Victorian, and had a dark aura about it. As a 7 year old, it appealed to me. I felt good inside when I looked at it, I wished I could be that woman in that picture, with the gorgeous beauty spot and perfect bosom. It wasn’t until today that I opened my recently delivered Vivienne Westwood book, that I saw this image for the very fist time since I was 7. It was like id been reconnected with my youth in a heart beat. My memories came flooding back to me of when I was that little girl, cutting out images of pretty woman in pretty frocks. It wasn’t until this day, that I found out that image was a Vivienne Westwood creation. But I do know from a young age, I knew her name and most certainly knew she was brilliant.

When I became a little older, maybe 9 or so, I used to go to my local library and borrow wedding, fashion and vogue magazines. With the turning of every page, my eyes would light up in awe of the images I were seeing. Sometimes I would even rip a page or two out of the magazine, believing that I could not live with out this image in my possession. I read the wedding magazines, because I loved to see the great big dresses, I wished I could see a world of people wearing those very dresses everyday. This was my fantasy as a child, owning a room full of gowns that i could just dream in. That’s why, John Galliano for Dior, Vivienne Westwood, Christian lacroix, Valentino, Chanel haute couture, are all my inspiration to my fantastical ideas and escapism.

So here I am, Karla Marie, consumed by fashion and everything it beholds. I’m writing to all you lovers of fantasy out there. I hope you enjoy my words.

Much love,

Karla Marie.
